What is new about this vacuum cleaner?

The main design challenge I decided to tackle was physical size. Portable vacuum cleaners are usually too bulky to be hidden away.

By redesigning the drive system of the cleaner I not only reduced the physical size but also improved efficiency. The smaller size along with the minimalistic stand made the vacuum cleaner fit anywhere, even the space behind an open door and the wall.

Market research

Vacuum cleaners are a competitive field in electronics. Market research helped me to come up with a design that will stand out

First sketches

Smaller sketches helped me ideate quickly but I needed to move to bigger sketches quickly

Colored sketches

These bigger (and colored) sketches made me grasp the ergonomics involved. Also a transparent layer of details are added

Custom drive system

A custom drive system was the main reason behind the smaller footprint

1/1 hand-carved model

Using some templates I made I hand carved a XPS model of the vacuum I decided to go with. This helped with getting the final form and ergonomics

1/1 3D print

After the XPS model, I refined the model in CAD. I also designed the power nozzle. The addition of buttons, vents, handles, and a dust compartment release latch were some final touches for this design.
