Dalga
Beyond the plastic wave - 22nd Andreu World Design Contest Runner
Origins
Fishing nets
Up to 1 million tons of fishing gear is littering the oceans every year. Discarded nets and lines make up 46% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Process
Material research
We wanted to start the project with material research as we wanted to use up discarded material.

Sketches
A conjoined sketching session helped us create different techniques for using weaved fishing nets.
Paper Mock-up
A quick paper mock-up served to visualize the our chosen sketch sketch in 3D

3D Prints
With these two sets of 3D prints (and fishing wire), we tested how we could use the weaved rope
Assembly
After CAD modelling we decided how the chair would be assembled

1/5 prototype
Dalga's final prototype is made from all real materials which was required for competition entry. This prototype was sent to Valencia, Spain and archived by Andreu World
Detailed Prototyping Process
Laser cutting
Laser cut side pieces with our hand cut dovels (photo from our first dry fit)
Sticking the veneer
Wood veneer is used in both sides to help with the plywood look
Sanding the veneer
Side pieces are sanded to get rid of laser marks and blend the veneer
Weaving the line
Real fishing line is sourced and weaved by us to adhere to our aim of using real material
Assembly
The prototype is assembled the same way the real one was designed to be assambled
Final model
The prototype is now fully assembled and ready to be shipped
