Garlic Press
An ergonomics study redesigning a kitchen novelty
Process
Clay modelling
To better grasp the ergonomics I started with a 3D printed spine and modelled the clay around to be comfortable as possible

CAD modelling
CAD helped me study the motion and fine tune the tolerances for prototyping
Prototypes
Heaps of prototyping went into finding the optimal sieve and self cleaning geometry along with handles and hinges.

Usage testing
Crushing real garlic was the benchmark for these tests. After all the best analogue for a garlic is - a garlic!
Main Prototype Versions
V1
This first prototype was made to test my motion study which it passed. But it failed to crush the garlic
V2
In the second prototype I changed the weak pin to a stronger screw. Also the sieve geometry changed
V3
A replacable sieve and cleaner to test different tolerences of matching surfaces made the press easier to clean
V4
I reduced the sieve hole count and used a single surface for crushing. With the new tolerances the new press held up to extensive torture testing.
